Staff of Allen Avenue UU church

We are proud of the staff that serves our congregation. You can read more about them here and we invite you to visit us to get to know them better!

Reverend Myke Johnson

We invite you to learn more about our minister, Reverend Myke, by clicking here! She is in her office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m from September through June. Please contact her to make an appointment, since days often fill up ahead of time. You can speak to her by phoning the church office at (207)797-7240 or by email at any time. During July and August, you can reach a member of the Pastoral Care Team at 797-7240, ext. 13 or by email

Carolyn Barschow, Director of Religious Exploration

Carolyn coordinates our Sunday morning religious education (RE) program and our ministry to families and children. She is available on Sunday mornings and has office hours 12 - 4 on Wednesdays and is available by appointment. You can reach her to set up an appointment at 207-797-7240, or by email.

Carolyn brings experience in creating child-centered and experiential learning environments in Montessori schools and a Master's degree in Teaching and Learning from the University of Southern Maine. She joined the Philadelphia UU congregation in 2006 and since arriving in Maine has been a leader at First Parish in Portland in social justice, governance and membership. She enjoys vegetarian cooking, gardening, biking and is learning to play the ukulele.

Dale Churchill, Director of Music

You can read more about Dale and our music program! Dale is usually available at church on Thursday afternoons and evenings (when he conducts choir rehearsal) from September until late June. His hours at the church are Thursdays 7 - 9:30 pm and Sundays 8:30 am - 12:30 pm.

Minna Sorell, Church Administrator

Minna handles our communications, finances, and building management and brings order into the chaotic life of our congregation. She moved from Finland to Virginia in '92 but wanted a cooler clime, so she is now in Maine! Her nursing degree specialized in individuals with developmental disabilities and she has spent most of her working life managing group homes or half-way houses. Most recently she was an administrative assistant to a Portland family helping with their philanthropic and foundation work.

Our church office is open from 9 - 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, September through June. Minna can be reached at 797-7240, ext. 11. During the summer, hours are reduced, but she checks messages frequently.

Laura BurdenLaura Burden, Membership Coordinator

Laura offers a warm welcome to our visitors, and helps everyone to find their "niche" in church activities and projects. She works with our Members Connections group and guides newcomers through the process of becoming members of our church. See more about membership here. Laura is at church on Sunday mornings from September until late June, and can also be reached by leaving a message for her at the church office, 797-7240, ext. 14, or by email during the regular church year. She is "off duty" during July and August, but you can find out more about membership by emailing the Pastoral Care Team during those months.

Matthew Strobel, Sexton (custodian)

Matthew is on duty part-time throughout the year. His work schedule varies, according to building use and needs, maintenance projects and rentals. He can be contacted by leaving a message at the church office.

Israel Buffardi, Intern minister

Israel was raised in an Italian-American community in Providence, RI. He has done community outreach in the specialty food and sustainable agriculture communities in Maine. As well, he is passionate about the local arts scene, participating in many theater productions. Israel is pursuing an M. Div. at Meadville Lombard Theological School. We welcome to our congregation during 2016-17.

Note: Most of our staff take some time off in the summer, and our church office has limited summer hours. However, phone and email messages are checked regularly.
